AMCAP is one of the most useful tools for simply viewing and working with USB webcams. AMCAP is completely free and has many new features you might find useful. Personally my favorite feature is the built in UVC control for Pan Tilt and Zoom. This software has become the cornerstone for our testing, and we wanted to share a little bit about how we use AMCAP. This is a free Windows application and to the best of our knowledge there is no Mac or Linux versions.
As you can see from the picture above the "Video Capture Filter" you can select your USB camera and adjust the technical settings like resolution and frame rate. The "Video Capture Pin" is where you can check to see if you camera has UVC control capabilities. If your camera has the capability to be controlled via UVC then the slider bars for control will be activated. You may find your camera can control certain aspects of operation but not the entire rage of features. For example you may be able to control the focus but not the pan tilt or zoom.
With AMCap you can easily use the record feature, either in MPEG2 or AVI configuration, if you have the required codecs. It includes some other intriguing choices, for example, the capacity to take screenshots or add embellishments to the picture (realistic overlay, alpha-mixing, sharpness, and so forth.).
That said, we discovered AMCap a tad misleading. We expected: a webcam observing and control device which is exactly what you get. However, if your looking a adobe style feature rich application AMCap will not prove very valuable. It doesn't even give you a chance to take screenshots naturally as indicated by a specific time frame. Additionally, the data of the features take up a great deal of room, so you better have a substantial hard drive prepared! For recording we prefer VLC or a native software to your operating system like Windows Movie Maker or iMovie for Macs.
AMCap is a basic instrument that gives you a chance to tweak settings on your UVC controllable camera such as: resolution, frame rates, contrast and potentially Pan, Tilt and Zoom Controls.
