The SRG-120DU, SONY finally releases a USB camera!

The SRG-120DU, SONY finally releases a USB camera!

Hello USB Pros!

Today is somewhat of a landmark day for SONY as they release the new SONY SRG-120DU. Although SONY's ProAV camera solution category has been under scrutiny in the past few months as distributors and AV Partners have turned to alternatives with USB, today SONY finally came out with it's own USB Camera. I personally remember 3 years ago at InfoComm show when SONY representatives were looking at the VDO360 VPTZH-01 camera (one of the industries first USB PTZ camera models ) saying "USB? What for?". Well here we are three years later and yes USB is a big thing. End users are loving the professional camera options available in the USB camera market for one simply reason: ease of use. Whether users are setting up cloud based online video conference rooms or live broadcast solutions a USB video connection can be ideal.

So let's take a look at what we know about SONY's new SRG-120DU. It's not out quite yet and major retailers like BnH photo currently do not the have product even listed. But we do have the data sheet and we plan to compare the SONY with other USB cameras in the market such as Vaddio and PTZOptics. Here we have a quick overview of the features in our comparison chart we will use to compare a few other USB PTZ cameras on the market in a later post.

Basically, this is going to be a USB 3.0 video conferencing camera with 12X Optical Zoom. Here are some of the main features.

  • USB 3.0 HD Video connection
  • 1920x1080p video up to 60 fps
  • IP Control
  • VISCA over IP
  • 71 degree field of view
  • View-DR which is basically Wide Dynamic Range
  • 16 Presets

This look like a great camera from SONY. Were definitely excited to see a big player like SONY entering the market. But will it be enough to compete in this already busy market. Were going to get a new demo unit in roughly 1-2 months where we can start to produce side by side test footage. SONY has already established itself with a certain level of quality which may be beyond what else is available on the market. Keep an eye out for a review of this camera and comparison to the market players: Vaddio and PTZOptics available here.

The Evolution of WebRTC

The Evolution of WebRTC

 WebRTC

WebRTC also known as Web Real-Time Communication is an API developed by World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and Google. It supports browser-to-browser applications such as voice-calling, video chat and Peer-to-Peer file sharing without any additional plugins. WebRTC is an open source project proposed by Google and is now supported by several other browsers. The API is still a work in progress but shows promise for the future.

The main purpose of WebRTC is to bring:

  • Real-time communications to the web
  • Build a state of the art media stack in browsers
  • Develope a new communications platform
  • Enable P2P file sharing
  • Provide a video conferencing solution that requires no download
  • Create a faster video and audio conferencing experience

WebRTC is supported across many platforms and other browsers have joined in for support. Currently, the following platforms and browsers support WebRTC:

  • Chrome
  • Chrome for Android
  • Firefox
  • Opera
  • Native Java and Objective-C bindings
  • Canary

Pro Audio with USB

Pro Audio with USB

Hello USBPros!

Today we wanted to talk about three audio conferencing companies that have added USB 2.0 connectivity to their professional audio conferencing product line. ClearONE, Phoenix Audio and Vaddio. Phoenix Audio has actually had USB in the product for a very long time, more than 10 years actually. Phoenix started with a product called the Duet in June 2005. The Duet has a built-in microphone and speaker with echo canceling and noise reduction capabilities. More are on the USB technology timeline here: http://software.conferenceroomsystems.com/ .
